With all this talk of babies — Evonne is about to pop, Holly just delivered (congratulations!) — I started thinking about all the amazing gifts we received when Kate and Carter were born. Bumbos, boppies and binkies…oh my!Holly has a great list of suggestions for thoughtful gifts, but I had to share my absolute favorite, #1 most thoughtful gift that I-would-never-have-thought-of-and-am-so-grateful-for:Newspapers and magazines from the day my kids were born.Sounds kind of nerdy, right? It is. But my husband’s business partner — a guy, mind you — gathered up several copies of the local paper, some national newsies, and a Time and Newsweek magazine issued on my kids’ birth days and presented them to us with a bow. “You’ll love going through these with them when they’re older,” he said.He was so right. My kids are still small (3 and 6), but we love paging through the newsprint and magazines talking about who those people are and why they were important on that particular day. (Note: you will want to pre-screen these to get rid of brutal crime stuff… learned that the hard way.) Doing this, I think, has given my kids a sense that they are part of a much larger world, and that they are a vital part of it.
